the state fair

The Alaska State Fair came to town at the end of August.  It’s a long-awaited tradition for many Alaskan’s here.  It’s the talk of the town in the weeks leading up to it.  I don’t think I have ever been to a state fair.  On the east coast, I’ve attended my fair share of festivals, from Greek to Italian and everything in between.  I so enjoy the local festivals, especially the food.  Oh the glorious food, from sausage and peppers and zeppolis to freshly shaved lamb gyros and the baklava!  The heavenly baklava, served by the little old ladies from the Greek Orthodox church that answer all your questions in Greek and I don’t have a clue what they are saying.  Oh but can they make mouth watering Baklava!!

So yes, I adore festivals, primarily for their food.  I enjoy walking through the booths of local artists and vendors and I adore the laughter of my daughter as she goes on ride after ride (though I don’t enjoy the price of the tickets!)  So amidst the rainy Alaskan August, a sunny day appeared and we jumped on the opportunity to check out the Alaska State Fair.  We strolled through the aisles of booths, checked out the livestock and petting zoo, were entertained by a group of ghastly pirates (arg!) and ate our fair share of food!  Here is just a glimpse of our first time at the Alaska State Fair!!  (And make sure to go check out the Oklahoma State Fair on my sister-in-law’s blog!!)
